Concept

The four directions of work in Art Residence – Music, Dance (Theatre), Visual art, Media art – are being represented during one evening in a form of an exhibition of visual art and multi-genre show The Circular Ruins.

The idea to join widely different artists in one unit is based rather on motive and driving force of their creativity than on the final results of their work.

Poetic essay of Jorge Luis Borges The Circular Ruins has become the common motive for staging the show and for the exhibition. Birth and transformation of new ideas on the basis of that consigned to oblivion is the main idea of the soiree. Works presented to the audience bear traces of today’s technologies and archaic symbolism.

About the performance "Circular Ruins"
Circular ruins

The Circular Ruins performance demonstrates the basic principles of Art-Residence:

- the principle of multi genres,

- creative work united by common idea,

- presenting the end product in common space.

This work unites elements of

- contemporary dance,

- literature,

- contemporary music,

- ethnic music (tuvan throat singing and tambourine),

- media art,

- visual art.

The work under the performance has been arranged in such a way that any member of the team is a co-author, with a deliberative vote. During the work under the concept of the performance, all the artists had their own areas of responsibility.

The performance idea

The performance is inspired by The Circular Ruins, a poetic short story by Argentinean writer and poet Jorge Luis Borges. The idea and the spirit of the story make up the gist of the performance. The performance tells us about different realities of our world and magic practices, existing in the culture of different people, which could be a link between theserealities. So, the authors of the performance look for the intersection of different cultural traditions - ancient magic dream practice of South America, tuvan shamans tradition and European cultural tradition, which hides mysticism under the cover of ordinary things. As for the musical part, authors go with the same idea, bringing together music by John Zorn, Sainkho Namchylak and tuvan traditional music.

About the organizer
Circular ruins

International Culture Project «Art-Residence» is a space, uniting several directions of art:

         •        Visual art

         •        Music

         •        Dance

In the framework of the International Culture Project «Art-Residence», artists, choreographs, musicians of different directions from Russia and other countries are able to meet each other, share their experiences, work together and present joint ideas, which exist on the intersection of different genres of art.

Our objective is to collide concepts of the artists who belong to the same genre as well as to different genres of art, and to identify their unifying link.
