The Art-Residence’s four areas of focus – Music, Dance (Theatre), Visual Arts and Media Art – are presented in a single evening event in the form of a visual arts exhibition and the multi-genre performance *Circular Ruins*.

The idea of bringing together very different artists into a single whole is based more on the theme and driving force behind their creativity than on the final outcome of their work. Jorge Luis Borges’s poetic story *The Circles of Ruins* served as the unifying theme for both the theatre production and the exhibition.

The birth and transformation of new ideas based on those consigned to oblivion is the central theme of the evening. The works presented to the audience bear the hallmarks of both modern technology and archaic symbolism.

About "Circular Ruins" performance
Circular ruins

The performance *Circular Ruins* is based on the core principles of the Art-Residence:

– multi-genre approach,

– creative work within the framework of a shared concept,

– presentation of the final result in a single space.

The work combines elements from various genres:

– contemporary dance,

– literary text,

– contemporary music,

– ethnic music (Tuvan throat singing and the tambourine),

– video art,

– contemporary painting.

The production is organised on a horizontal basis, such that every team member is a co-author, has a say in resolving the creative challenges of the performance, and has their own area of responsibility in developing the overall concept.

The performance idea

Jorge Luis Borges’s poetic story ‘The Circular Ruins’, its spirit and its central idea, is the substance of the production. The production explores the intersection of the various realities that make up our world and the magical practices found in the cultures of different peoples, which bind these realities together. Thus, the creators seek the intersection of South American cultures with their ancient magical practice of dreamwork, the culture of Tuva’s shamans, who turn to a parallel reality, and the European cultural tradition, where mysticism is concealed beneath the veil of everyday objects. Musically, the authors follow the same principle, linking the contemporary music of John Zorn and Sainho Namchylak with traditional Tuvan music.

About the organizer
Circular ruins

International Culture Project «Art-Residence» is a space, uniting several directions of art:

         •        Visual art

         •        Music

         •        Dance

In the framework of the International Culture Project «Art-Residence», artists, choreographs, musicians of various disciplines from Russia and other countries can meet, share their experiences, work together and present collaborative ideas that lie at the intersection of different art forms.

Our aim is to bring together the concepts of artists working within both the same artistic field and different genres, and to identify the connections that unite them.
